How do women formulate themselves, and how are they formulated by men? This is a classic issue found throughout history. Philosophers and intellectuals, from Ancient Greece to the contemporary era, have formulated “womenfolk” in their own ways to various reactions. How do women exist in this patriarchal world? What has changed and what has remained the same following the emergence of various thoughts about women?

Through two books written on the theme of “sexuality” and “women’s thoughts”, we are introduced to related figures and their thoughts. For instance, Christina Siwi Handayani discusses sexuality according to Julia Kristeva. Next are Gadis Arivia (on Simone de Beauvoir and Seyla Benhabib), Haryatmoko (Michel Foucault), Robertus Robet (Jacques Lacan), Edi Riyadi Terre (Hannah Arendt), Moh. Yasir Alimi (Judith Butler), and Neng Dara Affiah (Ziba Mir-Hosseini). These texts were first presented in various lectures as part of Komunitas Salihara’s Public Lecture Series in 2011.

This discussion presents Intan Paramaditha and F. Budi Hardiman. Intan Paramaditha is a fiction writer who is currently completing her dissertation on film and sexual politics at New York University, US. Meanwhile, F. Budi Hardiman is a lecturer at STF Driyarkara, Jakarta.

The publication of both books by Komunitas Salihara is possible due to the kind support of Hivos.
