Cinema: Films Made by Women Screen Writers, Directors, and Producers in Islamic Cultures
Entry for Indonesia
by Intan Paramaditha
This entry describes the new women filmmakers who have emerged in Indonesia in the period following the end of the Suharto regime. They have revived the industry by producing films independently and challenged the state’s gender politics with frank examinations of gender roles and sexuality. In the context of Islamic resurgence and popular pietism that fostered Muslim cultural expressions in cinema and popular culture, topics such as gender and Islam are areas that might be further explored by women filmmakers in the near future. Today, however, their immediate engagement with Islam largely centers around their political activism and negotiation in responding to censorship laws and the reactions of some groups of extremist Muslims.
